ROER4D Curation and Publications team at Research Data management workshop
Thomas King and Michelle Willmers attended and presented at a faculty Research Data Management workshop held by the Centre for Higher Education (CHED) Faculty Research Committee at the University of Cape Town. As part of a broader faculty discussion on how to engage with open data, they shared ROER4D’s approach to research data management and discussed the practical issues of sharing open data and how to develop a data management plan. In using the examples from the ROER4D Open Data collection on the DataFirst repository, they gave participants insights into how research data can be prepared to be shared openly and stressed the importance of designing for sharing from the outset of a research project.

IT for Change launches technology integrated learning course
The Centre for Education and Technology at IT for Change has launched a Technology integrated learning course as a part of the Bachelors in Education (B.Ed.) program of Vijaya Teachers College, Bengaluru. This is the first B.Ed. program based on the National ICT Curriculum of the Central Institute of Education Technology (CIET), NCERT. The curriculum attempts to build ICT competencies in teachers to strengthen their professional capacities and to use ICT tools in their teaching. It also enables students to acquire digital literacy and vocational skills and improve their subject learning. The Centre for Education and Technology has developed the syllabus and course content for the student teachers of the B.Ed program as well as second course for teacher educators. The course has been consciously developed by using existing OER and the course will also work with and through course faculty and the student teachers to create OER, including in the local language Kannada. IT for Change’s approach, which is to develop collaborative models of OER adoption based on professional learning communities of teachers and teacher educators was part of ROER4D Sub-project 5’s study.

OER Action plan invitation of the 2nd OER World Congress
The 2nd OER World Congress to be held in September 2017 in Ljubljana, Slovenia has issued an invitation to contribute to a draft OER Action Plan. The draft programme for the 2nd World OER Congress to be held in September 2017 is also now available. ROER4D PI Cheryl Hodgkinson-Williams along with members of the ROER4D Network Hub team will be attending the Congress.

Applications for OpenCon closing soon
OpenCon will be held 11-13 November in Berlin, Germany and the call for applications to attend closes on 1 August. Each year, OpenCon, a conference and community for students and early career academic professionals interested in advancing Open Access, Open Education and Open Data, brings together a diverse group of participants, with travel scholarships available to most participants. For this reason, attendance at OpenCon 2017 is by application only.

Special issue of Knowledge Management for Development Journal focusses on Open Research and Open Data
The Knowledge Management for Development Journal has published an issue entitled ‘Open research, open data, and your development organization: best practices in information and data management for development‘. The articles in the journal present cases of open access and open data management approaches in diverse institutional settings around the world.
